Reading Recovery Reflection following PD session
2018
16 May

Session Emphasis: “Using Procedures to teach for Shifts”
Discussion Areas:
  1. Introducing the New Book (p115)
Change Over Time (p47)
This is where we are teaching for shifts. We need to ascertain what is happening in the child’s head and what we need to say to lift the strategic activity.
  1. Visual Analysis (pp148-152)
Consider...”Would  the child be able to write that word using HRSW?” Links between writing and reading.
Use the prompts in the guidelines..Copy and display..
“What can you see that might help?
Do you know a word that starts with those letters?
Make a note for next session about which prompts were usefeul in making shifts.
  1. Reading Vocabulary
Keep a note (refresh list and arrange for it to re-occur.

21 March
Session  focus:  “Adjusting the Level of Support” p 118
Two key discussion areas:
1.       Hearing and Recording Sounds
We talked a lot about how the child needs to learn to say the word slowly, before expecting the child to use counters or sound boxes. P94
2.       Phrasing in fluent Reading. Must get this going in the known, using very easy books.Listening to yourself . Some children need to be reminded to do this...Does that make sense? Does that sound right? This is key!
Points of interest:
New norms for Observation Survey are being researched.
Also new form for HRSW.
